Chantilly Neighborhood Meeting Minutes
September 15, 2026
Public Safety — Eric Bojaj, CMPD
- Overall crime in the Chantilly area remains relatively low, with 9 reported incidents in the latest review; several were associated with Independence Boulevard.
- Residents were encouraged to lock vehicles, remove valuables, never leave keys in cars, and report suspicious activity by calling 911.
- CMPD will respond to speeding and traffic complaints and can conduct targeted enforcement when residents provide specific locations and times.
- Residents raised concerns about homeless encampments near Independence Boulevard. CMPD will work with residents, property owners, Parks & Recreation, and other agencies depending on property ownership.
- CMPD is also conducting targeted enforcement of excessively loud/modified vehicles and street racing.
Chantilly Ecological Sanctuary – Ed Murray, Constructive Plant Rescue
- Invasive plants, including porcelain berry, kudzu, and Asian wisteria, are rapidly spreading and threatening the sanctuary's native plants and wildlife.
- A community effort is underway with Stormwater and environmental organizations to address the issue.
- November 14 | 10 AM–12 PM: Sanctuary beautification/invasive plant removal event.
CMS / Local Schools – Stephanie Sneed, Board of Education District 4 Chair
- CMS reported improvements in academic proficiency and graduation rates, while acknowledging ongoing transportation challenges due to a shortage of approximately 100 bus drivers.
- Oakhurst Elementary, Eastway Middle, and Garinger High School were discussed as C-rated schools. Stable leadership and targeted academic support were identified as important areas of focus.
- A Garinger High School school-supply drive is underway; donations will support teachers and students.
- The future of the existing Chantilly school property is currently undetermined. Any future sale or transfer would require CMS to first declare the property surplus. Green-space use was mentioned as one possible option, but no decision has been made.
Arts Plus – Wes Smith
- Arts Plus is converting the former Plaza Presbyterian Church space into a community arts center.
- Construction is expected to take approximately 10–12 months.
- During construction, Arts Plus is offering programs at Watershed, including children's programs, adult music classes, art classes, choir, and Kids Night Out.
- Financial assistance is available for families who need help with program costs.
Transportation Improvements
- Phase 1: Crosswalk over Pecan Ave at Shenandoah - expected to start fall of 2026
- Phase 2: Signalization of 7th Street at Bascom Street/Cameron Avenue. Anticipated to start after Phase 1 is complete. The whole project is expected to be completed by March 2027.
